Whistler council has approved a new Valley Trail “expressway” connecting Creekside to Function Junction at a council meeting on March 19. According to RMOW, the one-kilometre gap in the Valley Trail system will be filled in the next few years.
The council unanimously supported the staff in taking the next steps to create the extension of the Valley Trail on the north side of Alpha Lake, connecting the Alpha Lake Park and Millar Creek sections. Those wishing to reach Function Junction must now cross Highway 99 at Bayshores and navigate through the neighbourhood to reach Creekside.
Similarly, those coming up from Function Junction face a similar challenge as they follow the Millar Creek section, only to find it ends at Tamarisk, leaving them to find their way. The new Valley Trail route proposal was chosen after assessing four potential routes in 2022. The report’s preferred Valley Trail alignment would be along the north edge of Alpha Lake and Pine Point Park.
Permits and tenures are underway, and community engagement is set to follow. The project is expected to be completed by 2027 or 2028. This new Valley Trail extension bridges a crucial gap in Whistler’s trail network, providing a safer and more accessible route for pedestrians and cyclists.
